3D News!

No it's not the news in 3D, that would be pointless, this is just a recap of two stories regarding the application of 3D, the latest fad to sweep the entertainment industry, after the phenomenal success of Avatar.

Avatar Documentary on Yahoo Movies

For all of you Avatar fans out there (I'm sure there at least a couple), you may be interested in the documentary "Avatar: The Making of Pandora" up on Yahoo Movies right now. At 22 minutes it is a bit lengthy, but if you enjoyed Avatar, I'd recommend at least checking it out.

Mass Effect 2 Launch Trailer is Pure Win

A new Mass Effect 2 trailer has just hit the web, and it wins at everything forever. Or at least, wins at epic space-adventures. You'd think that after releasing over 9000 different trailers for this game, I'd be kind of sick of seeing them by now, but this one is simply fantastic. As this is the launch trailer, I am assuming there won't be anymore, but this was a great way to get the fans hyped for what will surely be a phenomenal experience. Fight for the lost on January 26th

Tonight Show Fiasco Finally Over

Finally, an end to the late night fiasco that's been going on for the past couple weeks. For those of you who were (somehow) unaware, you can read how this all started here. Since then, though, Conan O'brien, host of The Tonight Show, had stated that he wasn't going to continue hosting the show if it meant that it would air at 12:05. Quickly after, rumors circulated that Conan would be let go, to have Jay Leno take back over as host of the Tonight Show, and today NBC has officially confirmed those rumors.

First Impression: Spartacus: Blood and Sand

After checking out our preview for the new Starz series Spartacus: Blood and Sand, I believe it is time to hear the verdict on the series’ first episode.

The story follows Spartacus (Andy Whitfield), a formidable Thracian warrior who goes from soldier, to slave, to gladiator, to a thorn in Rome’s side. This first episode, to me, seeks to set up Spartacus as the final domino in a series. When he is added to the mix he sets off a flowing chain of events that not only affects him, but those around him.

Marc Webb Gets the Nod to Spin His Web Over Spider-Man

After several sources put forward a rumour that (500) Days Of Summer director Marc Webb was the guy Sony wanted to direct their Spider-Man reboot, Webb's involvement has been officially confirmed by Columbia President Matt Tolmach and Sony co-president Amy Pascal in a press release. Tolmach and Pascal had this to say on the appointment of Webb to the project:

MacGruber Red Band Trailer Proves Movie Actually Exists

Another in the growing list of "movies I didn't believe were actually being made until I saw the trailer," MacGruber has burst onto the web with a red band. I honestly don't know what to say about this trailer. It's not hilarious, but it made me chuckle, and I suppose I'm not-not looking forward to the movie. The film, if you aren't familiar with it, is based on a series of SNL sketches that parodied in large part the 80s TV show, Macgyver. For your convenience, I've posted one of the more recent ones below the trailer, check out a whole lot of MacGruber below:

Review: The Book of Eli

Recently, I haven’t had any urge to watch movies. So when my dad said, “Hey, let’s watch The Book of Eli,” I said, “I don’t really feel like it.”  Needless to say, I ended up watching it anyway. I went in with only the knowledge that the story took place in a post-apocalyptic world that looked eerily similar to Fallout. The only review I had seen was from At the Movies, minutes before I left – one “See It,” one “Skip It.”

Matt's Rantbox: Dark Void Demo

Or: Yeah, I Play a Lot of Demos…

Real quick, I just wanted to let everyone know that there is an interview with me up at Only Good Movies Blog. They have a section where they interview movie critics (which is where you'll find me), but they also have some other cool stuff, and I highly recommend that you check it out. Anyway, lets get on with the Rantbox.

Paranormal Activity Sequel Gets Saw VI's Director

Unnecessary? Probably. Surprising? Not really. A sequel to Paranormal Activity, a massive break-out success, is moving closer to production with the announcement of a new director. The original creators have been kept on as producers, but Paramount has decided to assign screenwriter Michael R. Perry, predominantly a TV writer, and director Kevin Greutert, who last directed the most recent in the Saw franchise.

Who or What is Sinestro?

After the announcement that Peter Sarsgaard was in negotiations with Warner to play the villain Dr. Hector Hammond, many sites (not this one) jumped to the conclusion that the villain Sinestro would not be appearing in the Green Lantern film. As an avid follower of comic book news, I have been keeping tabs on the wealth of information about the character and his involvement with the film scattered about the the web.

Something Cool: Ferrofluid Sculpture

In my trawls of the internetland, and reminiscing about our sadly now completed series of music videos, I found this. It's really something beautiful and strange, and no, it's not a clever 3d animation. It's actually a new medium of sculpture using electromagnets to manipulate a magnetically charged fluid in real time. Here, to a piece of music. It's actually a little surreal, but stunning. Something weird and magnificent that I would expect Brendan to find, and to really get a kick out of. So in memory:

Music Video(s) of the Week: In Memoriam

As you probably know, our friend and teammate Brendan Kutler passed away a few weeks ago. In memory of him, a few of us on the 8th have collected our favorite selections from his column, Music Video(s) of the Week. Part reflection on the work of a talented and passionate member of our community, part tribute to a incredible friend, we hope you've enjoyed Brendan's work as much we have.

Preview: Spartacus: Blood and Sand

With the impending debut of the new Starz Original series, Spartacus: Blood and Sand, on the 22nd of January and our advanced review of the first episode, that’s right, the 8th is slowly but surely moving up in the world.

Review: Daybreakers

Despite the slew of vampire movies coming down the pipe in recent years, let’s admit to ourselves: very few of them have been any good. Sure, we had the Swedish imports of Frostbitten and Let the Right One In. But come one, Twilight and Cirque du Freak? New Moon and Transylmania? Domestically, we have been simply sucking (pun intended) at making vampire movies. Some have called Daybreakers refreshing and to some even original. These critics may not have seen as many vampire movies as me, for the genre is my forte, but for the most part, they are right. Daybreakers provides the missing gore from the genre and adds some nice new tropes to the genre as well.
