Comic-Con: Master Chief Returning in Bungie-less Halo 4?
343 Industries head Frank O'Connor reassured the crowd of Halo fans at Comic Con (via IGN), and around the world, that even though Bungie won't be at the helm of future Halo games that doesn't mean that the series most iconic character will be heading into the wilderness. O'Connor told fans at the convention that "We'd have to be the world's biggest a**holes not to follow through," O'Connor said. "We certainly haven't seen the last of Master Chief."
Now while that sounds like a good sign that the Chief will return in 343 Industries' first Halo game, it is by no means a guarantee. O'Connor, and 343 Industries, are not only responsible for the post-Bungie Halo games but also for the creation of any other Halo-related media, which includes comic books, novels and movies. That means that O'Connor's reassurance may not be directly related to an appearance from Master Chief in a Halo game, but in some other form of media.
Still fans will probably be hoping that 343 will continue Master Chief's story in video game form. At the end of Halo 3, the Chief goes into cryosleep and his ship arrives at a mysterious planet, an ending that has had fans excited for more Chief adventures for quite sometime. With Bungie still hard at work on Halo: Reach it will probably be sometime before we hear anything about 343's first Halo game and whether it will contain the Chief. In the meantime, fans will be able to look forward to the upcoming Marvel comic Halo: Fall of Reach and its first issue, "Boot Camp #1" (available this winter) which is set to tell the Chief's origins, complete with pretty pictures. Hopefully the comic will please Halo fans' appetite for Master Chief goodness until 343 can get to work on some new Chief adventures.
It does beg the question though, should 343 look to develop their own iconic character and leave the Chief as Bungie's thing, or is the Chief so important to the Halo franchise that a Bungie-less Halo game will need the Chief to keep drawing in the fans?

I think it's an excellent idea that 343 (Microsoft) is continuing the story of The Master Chief. Bungie left the ending of Halo 3 wide open solely for a movie. THAT'S IT. After Halo 3 Bungie said that they give permission to let The Chief be in a movie so long as they had nothing to do with him or the movie (almost as if they hate him). After production on the movie flopped, Bungie simply said "Oh well, we're still not continuing The Chief's story". That was the final nail in the coffin and 343 Industries/ Microsoft dropped the contract with Bungie allowing a final game to be made in Bungies name (Reach).
343 Industries is going to continue Master Chief's story, through most of the froms of media. Most noteably, in the forms of video games and a film. Microsoft bought all rights to the idea of a movie and is personally overseening a newly funded pre-production of a Halo movie. That's the only released info on the movie. As much as I loved the style of Bungie when it came to Halo (mostly Martin O'Donell's music), I believe that this 1st party turned 3rd party company who's been looking over Bungies shoulder all these years will do just fine in upcoming work.
