Modern Warfare 2 Makes Mad Money, Breaks Records

I'm sure it's a surprise to no one that IW's Modern Warfare 2 is a massive success. But just how incredible a success it just might. Just two days after the game's release, publisher Activision was proud to announce that game had sold 4.7 million copies in North America and the UK alone... in 24 hours; coming in at about $310 million. Like, wow.

According to the publisher's internal estimates, the game has generated approximately $550 million during its first five days, a new record for all entertainment mediums. This breaks the previous record for games set by GTAIV at 3.6 million and the film, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, whose five day record stands at $394 million. If anyone needs proof that the gaming industry is quickly becoming the 500-pound gorilla of entertainment, look no further.

the video game industry is fast becoming a 500-pound guerilla driving a tank that crushes all comers while smoking expensive cuban cigars

The thing about the video game industry is that you have to sell far less units in order to make more of a profit. If you buy a movie ticket, that's only 10 bucks, but buying a video game is at least 60, possibly more if you take into account special editions and whatnot. What does this mean? Well, basically it just means that video games aren't necessarily more popular, they just have more dedicated fans (it takes more dedication to spend 60 bones rather than 10, IMO). Also, I read in the LA Times that Activision actually estimated their sales to be around $1 Billion, so they were somewhat disappointed with their $550 Million revenue. Greedy much?(Although, I also read that they spent 200 Mil on advertising/production/distribution before the game's release).

It's not about "popularity" or anything abstract like that, it's all about the $s. 2012, a huge Hollywood blockbuster film cost significantly more than $200 million to produce, much more including advertising, distribution, etc. In the five days since its release, it's barely made it's budget back, at best. Modern Warfare 2 cost about $40-50 million, maybe another 200 in advertising (although it's very possible that number is inflated). In ONE DAY, it made almost 100 MILLION DOLLARS more than 2012. And half a billion dollars in less than a week? That's money, literally.

I'm not denying that it didn't make a lot of money, I'm just saying that it doesn't take as many sales in order for a game to make a profit (as compared to a movie). Which, really, makes the video game industry MORE of a 500-pound-gorilla, if you think about it.
I must say Modern Warefare 2 is an awesome game, I got behind on my air conditioning maintenance when I first bought the game, because I couldn't tear myself away from the game, but the gaming industry is getting very greedy. It seems the price for CD's and DVD's have dropped, but for the price for games just seems to rise.
