YMBMO: Astro City sticky icon

Comic books. Homoerotic adolescent fascist wish fulfillment that privileges the phallocentric – *cough* excuse me, this YMBMO isn’t on the arcane excesses of critical theory. Today is about comic books, not deconstructions of comic books, but re-constructions of comic book archetypes as modern myth. Sorry, I almost lapsed into literary criticism jargon again. I’ll skip to the point as fast as a speeding bullet then: This YMBMO is about fun. Welcome to Astro City.

Review: Scott Pilgrim vs the World sticky icon

This movie took balls to make, I'm just going to put that out there. Massive, colossal balls; and probably some level of colorful insanity. In his adaptation of the acclaimed comic series Scott Pilgrim, Edgar Wright took what was already an over-the-top piece of work, and crafted what will probably go down as one of the most (if not the most) crazy movies ever put to screen. It's like if Dr. Seuss and Quentin Tarantino had a baby, and that baby was trained from birth by Jackie Chan to become the greatest ninja the world has ever known and then that ninja had a bad acid trip. Scratch that, an awesome acid trip!

Cap America: Stanley Tucci on His Role

In June it was announced that Stanley Tucci was cast as Dr. Abraham Erskine in the upcoming film, Captain America: The First Avenger. Dr. Erskineis the scientist behind the Super-Soldier Serum that turns Steve Rogers into the Captain. In a recent interview with Screen Crave, Tucci revealed some details on his character.

This is Nostalgic: Calvin and Hobbes, The Search Engine

Oh wow, nostalgia attack. Having grown up on Calvin & Hobbes comic strips, this is pretty awesome. This is a search engine; not just any search engine though, a C&H one! Type in any keyword and it will search every single strip for references to that phrase. Have you ever wanted to read all the Spaceman Spiff comics? Or see how many times Calvin references Dinosaurs? Well now you can! Amazing!

Freakonomics Movie Trailer

Freakonomics, a new documentary adapted from the bestselling book of the same name, has just recieved its first trailer. We got a chance to see the film during the LA Film Fest, and I know Musashi loved it quite a bit. The documentary is actually an omnibus collaboration between a number of acclaimed filmmakers, including Morgan Spurlock and Rachel Grady. Each of the documentarian's individual segments are introduced by authors Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner. Having read the book myself, I can say that it stays pretty true to the spirit and tone. Each of the segments brings its own distinctive style to the table as well, making it an all-around unique documentary experience.

Paramount to Adapt Graphic Novel Last Man Standing

While some like Matthew Vaughan have stated that superhero films may be a dead genre soon, due to an over saturation of poor quality work, the comic book genre as a whole looks to kick on because it provides such a diverse range of stories. Enter Paramount's latest acquisition Last Man Standing: Killbook of a Bounty Hunter.
