Whaaaaaaaaaat. We had previously heard that Blade Runner followups were on their way in the distant future, but this news changes everything. We haven't been told if the film will be a sequel or prequel, but just the fact that Ridley Scott is directing is simply massive.
I'm really not sure what to make of this one. While the world of Blade Runner was undoubtedly pretty awesome, it always seemed like the kind of movie that any sequel or spin-off would have a difficult time following. Due to its status as a sci-fi classic, any followup to Blade Runner automatically feels like something of a cash-in, especially in the current atmosphere of remakes and sequels Hollywood has been fostering lately. Unfortunately, it looks like we'll be seeing one pretty soon, as the rights have been snatched up by Alcon Entertainment, the production company behind The Blind Side and The Book of Eli.
