Movie Review: Drive

I knew very little about Drive, aside from the fact that it had been raved about, and it had some very pervasive advertising. Set in a sparkling, almost alien vision of Los Angeles, the movie focuses on an unnamed stunt driver, played by Ryan Gosling, who works as a getaway driver at night. He is stoic, emotionally detached, and efficient. A move to a new apartment brings him into the life of Irene, a down to earth working mom (played by Carey Mulligan). He is quietly smitten, but keeps his distance, doing his best to be a ray of hope into Irene and her son Benicio’s lives. All of this goes awry when Irene’s husband gets out of prison, and his criminal dealings threaten Irene and Benicio. The driver steps in to protect the family, and soon finds himself way over his head.

'Drive' Gets More Violent in New Red Band Trailer [SDCC11]

Drive, the latest film by Nicolas Winding Refn (Bronson) and starring Ryan Gosling, was featured at Comic-Con's famous Hall H. We got a chance to see the film at this year's LA Film Festival, but we'll all have to wait until September 16 to see the film in theaters. Luckily, panel saw the debut of a new look at the film in the form of a red band trailer. Check it out below, not completely SFW.

Review: Drive [LAFF]

Every so often, a movie comes out that makes you sit there and wonder, “What did I just watch?”  Most of the time that question probably isn’t the response a director is looking for.  With Drive, it seems to be exactly what Nicholas Winding Refn wants you to ask.  IMDB describes the movie thusly: "A Hollywood stunt performer who moonlights as a wheelman discovers that a contract has been put on him after a heist gone wrong."  This gives the audience something to go off of, but doesn’t really give the film justice.
