so, this year's the year where a lot of big features are in 3D.

opinions on 3D, let's have them!
does it have a general positive or negative impact on aesthetics, storytelling/immersion, cost, commercial success?

Wow what a coincidence, as I was just reading this article:
http://cinemablend.com/new/Why-3D-Movies-Represent-Everything-Wrong-With-Our-Country-12500.html

He's really angry, but he makes some good points. On the other hand, I think 3D has the potential to revolutionize entertainment media in the same way that things like sound, color and interactivity have. Its a ways away from perfect, but we shouldn't shun it just because its gimmicky and unnecessary at this point in time.

I think that 3D is the next logical step in the progression of movies, honestly. I was reading an article in Entertainment Weekly recently in which they were talking about how its one of the few "gimmicks" that's still getting people to go out and see movies. Now-a-days its so easy to just sit at home and download flicks (sometimes illegally *cough*Wolverine*cough*), that this is probably the last way that theaters have to get you to go and pay for a movie.
At least, you know, until they develop those sense cord things like they have in 'Rant.'

blehh, the only good 3D movie I've seen is Coraline. Everything else just seemed really gimmicky

maybe i am just a misanthropic bastard but i will never enjoy a 3-D experience whilst the back of my seat is being kicked by a 5 year old hyped on soda and candy. The problem with 3-D is that it is supposed to be fully immersive and yet the majority of people who see it are kids and kids are the last group of people i would like to share an experience with, with the exception of terrorists, pedophiles, or Matthew McConaughey.

well My Bloody Valentine was in 3-D and that's not a kiddie movie.

but I do agree. it's going to be a while before we see 3-D used in a non-gimicky way/ used in more "simple" movies like actions flicks & family films. yet paradoxically, 3-D won't be taken seriously until it gets out of those genres.

I'm told Avatar was shot in stereoscopic 3D (see poll)

I think stop-animation looks best in 3-d, compared to live action which looks way too gimicky and computer generated films like Up. Movies such as Coraline and Nightmare Before X-mas immerse in worlds that were 3-d to begin with, but not with real-life humans that never look right popping out of the screen. When I saw Pixar's Up in 3-d I didn't feel like I would lose anything not seeing it in that style, while with Coraline and NBXmas I feel I'd miss a whole layer of the film.

I think you're confusing 3D with CGI maybe?
