'12 Years a Slave' Trailer Promises Harrowing Historical Tale — Bolstered by Acting Dream Team
Michael Fassbender re-teams with director pal Steve McQueen for a chilling tale of white supremacy, slavery, and life in pre-Civil War America. But Django Unchained this is not. 12 Years a Slave is based on a true story, unwinding the excruciating journey of a free black man's descent into captivity and his quest for freedom. It also stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Brad Pitt, and Paul Giamatti — so yes, it's destined for epicness (possibly of the Oscar variety).
Check out the official synopsis:
Set for release on December 27, 12 Years a Slave is based on the 1853 autobiography of Solomon Northrup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man from upstate New York, who was abducted and sold into slavery. Facing cruelty (personified by a malevolent slave owner, portrayed by Michael Fassbender), as well as unexpected kindnesses, Solomon struggles not only to stay alive, but to retain his dignity. In the twelfth year of his unforgettable odyssey, Solomon’s chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist (Brad Pitt) will forever alter his life.
And the official poster:
