Anne Hathaway to Star in Modern-Day ‘Taming of the Shrew’ Adaptation
Anne Hathaway, recent star of The Dark Knight Rises and Les Miserables, will star in a modern-day adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew.
The film adaptation will be written by Abi Morgan, writer of the films The Iron Lady and Shame, and will be produced by Debra Hayward and Working Title. The film will be distributed by Universal, a company who has collaborated with Hayward on Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, Atonement, and Les Miserables.
The play has seen many film and stage adaptations including the musical, Kiss Me, Kate in 1951 and the infamous Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton film in 1967. Hollywood took a crack at modernizing the tale in 10 Things I Hate About You, which stars the late Heath Ledger and is considered to be one of his best works.
Hathaway, nominated for her work in Les Mis, has won a best supporting actress Golden globe and has a very good chance of winning an Oscar as well. With her now critically acclaimed acting chops, Hathaway is expected to deliver a quality performance as the play’s leading shrew, Katherine.
No word yet on when the film will be released.
