Hey, You Got RPG in My RTS! Leveling System to be Added to 'Starcraft II'
Thanks to the Starcraft II blog, we've now got some hot new information regarding the upcoming expansion Heart of the Swarm. And that news is: A leveling system for players. Wait. What?
The way that Leveling will work, supposedly (keep in mind that this is all still in beta) is that any actions you peform in a game will give you XP. That XP will help you level up from Rank 1 to Rank 20 - and each race has it's own rank scale. Leagues and ladders will still be a component in Heart of the Swarm, so how your rank effects the game, I don't really know.
Blizzard states, though, that XP and rank will determine when you unlock portraits, decals and other items. Woo?
Seriously, though, I think that a ranking system is definitely an interesting addition to the game. It'll be interesting to see how it gets implemented in the final product. I know some people who were put off by Starcraft II's harsh ladder system (win = go up, lose = go down, regardless of how you played), so this might help to assuage some of those problems.
It'll definitely be nice to get some recognition regardless of whether you won or lost the game. This could allieviate some of the "must win at any cost" mentality that seems to surround a lot of players. So maybe we'll see a little more adventurous strategies, rather than match after match of Zerg rushes. Just sayin'.
