'Justice League' Film Will Be Down One Moody Christian Bale
If and when the supers of the DC Universe join forces for a big screen feature, Christian Bale's caped crusader will not be among them. The A-lister has confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that his tenure as Batman is officially over — though he's politely looking forward to the eventual reveal of his successor.
"I have no information, no knowledge about anything," Bale confessed when asked about the likelihood of him reprising his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman. "I've literally not had a conversation with a living soul. I understand that they may be making a Justice League movie, that's it. It's a torch that should be handed from one actor to another. So I enjoy looking forward to what somebody else will come up with."
While this news really shouldn't come as much of a surprise to anyone, it's still a bit of a bummer. Christian Bale and director Christopher Nolan created a Batman stripped of his hokey roots and infused with a thoroughly modern sense of burden and struggle. Surrounded by a cinematic universe that too often trivializes the weight of duty, he emerged as a flawed hero with real fears and real emotional journeys. He was — sorry, I can't resist — not the Batman we deserved, but the Batman we needed.
Of course, Bale was never the first to impress as Batman, and he certainly won't be the last. Assuming that Justice League does move forward, it'll be good to give some other Hollywood hunk a chance to make his mark.
