Prey 2 Explains Itself with Trailers and Gameplay [E3]
The first Prey was a strange blend of sci-fi, spirituality and nausea-inducing gravity shifts. It was quite a bit of fun, so it's no surprise that Bethesda acquired the rights to the franchise in order to help develop a sequel. It is however surprising that Prey 2 won't share a whole with the first game, shifting the setting to an alien planet, and centering the game around a U.S. Marshall turned galactic bounty hunter. Interesting. Prey 2's offerings at E3, including not only a teaser for the 2012 game, but also a pretty extensive gameplay walkthrough.
First off, here's the teaser and its continuation for the game. In an odd twist, the first part is live-action. Yeah, so that's weird.
While it isn't obvious, the two trailers actually do a decent job of connecting the two games. The second game shifts the focus from Tommy, the Native American badass responsible (spoiler alert) for driving the Sphere into the sun in the first game, to U.S. Marshall Killian Samuels. The plane crashing into the Sphere at the end of the teaser was actually shown in the first Prey, and serves as the starting point for the second game.
The game proper jumps forward a few years from the teaser and Samuels is now a bounty hunter on the alien world Exodus, as seen in the second half. However, his memory since the abduction has been lost. The mystery deepens when he meets Tommy on Exodus, who apparently knew Samuels during the missing time in his memory. It all sounds pretty confusing, but is a pretty interesting way to connect the two games nonetheless.
Developer Human Head also unveiled some gameplay, and it's pretty awesome how well it works considering how much of the setting they've changed. There's no portals this time around, but there is a pretty cool looking alien city. I think it's promising stuff, check it out below.
